ERA

ERA are a widely know security company that started off life in 1838 by John Reynolds in Willenhall, West Midlands. In the early days it manufactured car locks with a small workforce and was called J.E. Reynolds and Co. ERA has gone through many changes over the last 170 years ranging from supporting the war effort with machine gun spinners, several new factories and warehouses to now including wireless burglar alarm kits into their extensive product ranges. Of course they have also changed names over this period too.

Significant dates in the company history include a 5th generation locksmith called Ralph Morris joining the business in 1936 who would go onto purchase the company from the Reynolds family in the 1950's. Four years prior (1946) to this Ralph had returned the business to the manufacture of padlocks and night latches with the company supporting the war effort in 1939.

In 1959 a new factory was built on the site of the factory which was constructed in 1941 and this allowed the company to increase production and continue to grow further. Ten years after in 1969, new product ranges were introduced to include mortice and window locks.

Ralph Morris decided to pass on the business to his sons David and Peter in 1974 with their brother in law Michael Hunt joining them soon after. Around 10 years later the company was sold to the Laird group with David Morris and Michael Hunt remaining as joint managing directors. Peter Morris had left to start his own company making window latches by this point. With the business growing it was able to acquire several companies and both David and Michael left to pursue retirement and take over another business respectively.

On the 1st March 2000 the company changed the name to ERA Products Ltd which is one, many of us have come to know as a household brand name today. In 2007 it was purchased and rebranded twice in year from ERA to Tyman and then Grouphomesafe in 2008. This did not prove to be successful and in 2014 ERA re-discovered it's identity and it has never looked back with an award of The Investors in People accreditation also in 2014. It also became a partner in the Master Locksmiths Association in 2015 adding further credibility to the brand.

2017 will mark an end of an era though as ERA move to a new facility in South Staffordshire, this will allow innovation and continued growth in purpose built facilities.
