Five top tips to stop your home from being burgled

by Emma Broughton Turner

If you have to leave your home unattended for long periods of time or are going away on holiday it pays to make sure you are taking proper precautions with security. In a recent survey carried out by Co-op Home Insurance (https://hub.co-opinsurance.co.uk/how-burglar-friendly-is-your-home/), a panel of ex-burglars revealed the key things that put them off targeting a particular home, most of which the average household simply doesn’t bother with. Scary stuff! So here are our top five tips to help keep your home burglar free.

1. Lock Up Properly

It sounds like an obvious one but many people actually don’t bother with mortice locks, choosing to simply slam the front door and rely on the night latch when they leave home. Use all available bolts and locks and make sure you check that all windows (especially downstairs fan lights) are closed properly and locked where possible.

2. Get a Burglar Alarm

Relatively cheap and easy to install these little beauties will deter the average burglar. Our wireless burglar alarm kits are priced at just £95.99 so for the same cost as your bill at Pizza Express, and for the sake of hitting a few buttons before you leave home, you can make sure your property will send a clear ’stay away’ warning whilst you are out enjoying dinner.

3. On the lookout with CCTV

CCTV cameras are all around us now. From shopping centres and car parks to leisure centres and pubs. Yet surprisingly few of us think that getting one at home is worth it, especially considering 22% of burglars in the survey said that CCTV would put them off immediately. Not only can you protect the outside of your home, including the driveway and front door, but hallways and lobbies can be monitored as well, in some cases all from the touch of a button on your mobile phone. 4. Motion Sensor Lights

A bright light shining on your burglar just as they are about to break in is the last thing they need. So motion sensor lighting is perfect for the front of your home and your garden, especially if you back onto communal areas. Setting up internal lights with timers on are a good alternative but less of a menace for our would-be thief.

5. Hide that spare key!

Checking under doormats and in plant pots by the front door is ideal for chancers looking for spare door keys. There’s always someone in the family that forgets their keys so if you really do need to leave out a spare then use our key hider, designed to look like a rock, that can be hidden in the front or back garden for absolute emergencies. https://www.simplysafes.co.uk/sterling-rock-key-decoy-safe
